Types of Bipolar Disorder

There are a few types of bipolar disorders. These include:

Bipolar I Disorder

This type of disorder shows extremely erratic behavior, with manic ‘up’ periods that last for at least a week or are severe and require medical care.

Bipolar II Disorder

In this disorder, a person faces erratic lows and highs, but it is not as extreme as Bipolar I.

Cyclothymic Disorder

It involves periods of depressive and manic behavior that last at least two years in adults or one year in teens and children.

Unspecified or other specified bipolar disorder

It is helpful to describe the conditions in which a person only has a few energy and mood symptoms. It lets define a hypomanic or manic episode or the symptoms that may not last long.

It is not the type of bipolar disorder, but it is useful in describing the course of illness in people suffering from bipolar I or II disorders. It is applicable when mood episodes occur for about 4 or more a year.

Causes of Bipolar Disorder

There isn’t a single cause of bipolar disease. The researchers studied a few factors that may lead to it in a few people. For example, few may be a matter of genetics. It means that you have it because it is running in your family. How your brain develops may also play a major role, but scientists are not yet sure about the reason behind it.

Treatment for Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is treatable. It is a long-term condition that requires ongoing care. People with four or more mode episodes in a year or with alcohol or drug problems may have illnesses that are much harder to treat.

Treatment may make a huge difference. A combination of lifestyle changes, talk therapy, medications, good medical care, and support from family and friends may make you feel better.

Treatments like medication, psychotherapy, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), and Acupuncture may also help in treatment.
